Choosing Mish isn’t just a smart travel decision; it’s a win for the environment. By sharing rides, you contribute to fewer vehicles on the road, leading to reduced carbon emissions. Every seat filled is a step towards a greener New Zealand. Join Mish today and make your journey count for a cleaner, more sustainable future.
Our full terms are available here and contain all the ins and outs of our services. We recommend that you read and understand our terms before proceeding with engaging Mish for any service. While we do our best to ensure we update our FAQs promptly, if there is any inconsistency between our FAQs and our Terms and Conditions, our terms will prevail.
Mish is a rideshare app that connects people who are heading in the same direction and are keen to carpool and split the transport costs.
Drivers publish their journey details in the app, including the departure date and time, destination, number of spare seats available in their vehicle and the price they have chosen to charge per seat. Passengers search in the app for their ideal trip and book the suitable seats available and pay securely through the app.
It’s free to download Mish and create an account, whether you’re a rider or driver, or both. Passengers pay a service fee and GST in addition to the seat price when they book a seat (15% service fee and 15% GST). Drivers are not charged any service fees.
The drivers specify how much they want to charge per seat (maximum $0.73/km). This maximum is set by the Minister of Transport and is subject to change from time to time.
Please see our Terms & Conditions page here
Yes, there is an in-App messaging function. You can communicate on our App once a booking is confirmed.
Safety is very important to us. These are some of the measures we take to increase the level of safety: We hold drivers’ and riders’ personal details and profile pictures and all journey details. When users apply to become a driver, we check that drivers’ profile pictures and birth dates match the identity of their drivers licence and that they possess a full licence that has not expired. We check that the driver’s vehicle has a valid warrant of fitness and registration. Drivers and riders rate each other after each journey. Ratings are crucial for building trust between members and for making informed decisions. Take a look at them when choosing who you travel with. Use our in-app messaging system to arrange ride details and report any messages that seem inappropriate or suspicious. Some other ideas for keeping yourself safe would be having a fully charged phone and keeping it turned on, take screenshots of important ride details in case of low battery, consider sharing your trip details with a trusted person before departure and update them throughout the ride. If a conversation or situation makes you feel uneasy or unsafe, clearly communicate your discomfort and ask the person to stop.
If other passengers are onboard, they can support you and intervene. If any scenario like this occurs, please report it to us by emailing or submitting a ‘support ticket’ in the App.
If you ever feel threatened or unsafe, call 111 or reach out to someone who can contact the authorities on your behalf.
Not yet, this is something we want to implement in the future. Currently, when passengers search for a ride, Mish shows them trip options that are within a 30km radius of their searched departure and destination locations.
Yes. Mish goes anywhere a car goes.
Download Mish, create an account, select ‘Where to’ on the home page, then select the ‘Driver’ tab and follow the prompts. Have your vehicle and licence details handy.
No, Drivers aren’t charged any fees to use Mish. Services fees are only paid by passengers when they book a seat.
Drivers get paid out the full ‘seat price’ that they chose to charge, for the seats that were successfully booked. Payments to drivers are made after the trip has been completed. Mish aims to pay drivers within a couple of days of trip completion, but please allow up to 10 days. Payouts are made via bank transfer from Mish to the driver’s bank account that is loaded into their Mish profile.
No. All you need is a full driver’s licence and road legal vehicle (valid registration and warrant of fitness). Mish holds a Small Passenger Service Licence (SPSL). As we facilitate the connection between the driver and rider, the driver does not need an SPSL. We note that licence requirements are subject to change and it is the Driver’s responsibility to ensure that they comply with the relative Legislation as it relates to them.
Because you’re not making profit, you’re only sharing transport costs. Carpooling is considered a ‘cost-sharing arrangement’. As the facilitators of this cost-sharing service, we (Mish) hold a Small Passenger Service Licence (SPSL). Drivers who wish to split costs with other travellers heading in the same direction must only do so under a service who holds a SPSL. Drivers are reimbursed at a cost-sharing rate set by the Minister of Transport that reflects journey fuel costs and vehicle wear and tear. The maximum rate a driver can be reimbursed is $0.73 per kilometre, as defined in the Land Transport Act 1998. This maximum rate is built into our app so that drivers physically cannot charge more than this, but they may choose to charge less than this.
The difference between Mish and a traditional taxi service is that our drivers aren’t doing this as a job or way of making profit. Our app provides the platform to connect people who happen to be heading in the same direction and are keen to carpool and split the costs.
Don’t shoot the messenger! $0.73/km is the rate set by the Minister of Transport that represents the costs of fuel and reasonable vehicle wear and tear. We encourage our drivers to charge much less than this, because we want Mish to be an affordable way of getting around this beautiful country. The idea is to help drivers recover some transport costs while offering passengers a cheaper way to get around than other transport alternatives.
Mish holds a small passenger service licence which means our drivers must only carry passengers in a vehicle designed or adapted to carry 12 or fewer persons (including the driver).
When registering to become a driver, you provided your bank name and account number. Since this is an international bank, we require a few extra details to be able to process your Driver payouts. Please send us an email with the following details: the branch details of where the payment is going as well as the branch identifier (i.e. IBAN, NCC, sort code or BSB number), the exact name of the account and your location address that’s linked to this account.
You will be paid in the local currency of where your bank is located. The payout amount is subject to the currency conversion rate at the time of payment. An international bank transfer fee will apply. Your driver payout will be less $5 NZD, as this is the fee our bank charges us to process the international payment. There may be additional other bank charges deducted by your overseas bank. These charges will be deducted from the International Payment and therefore will decrease the amount received by the payee (you as the Driver). Payments to Cook Islands, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa, Vanuatu, Kiribati, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and Fiji are $0 transfer fee. All other countries are subject to the $5 fee.
As a driver, you are not making profit, instead only covering vehicle running costs. Under ordinary circumstances you should not need to pay any tax. However, we cannot provide financial or taxation advice to cover every scenario and we recommend all our drivers take financial and taxation advice if there are any questions or concerns regarding taxation.
Our understanding is that you don’t need any special insurance but we suggest you check with your insurance provider to ensure your current cover is suitable.
Yes, you can update the trip on the App as long as no one has booked a seat yet. If a seat is booked already, you can’t edit the details. However, once a booking is made, you are able to discuss any alternative arrangements with each other using the messaging function in the App.
Yes, however you must have entered NZ less than 12 months ago and your driver’s licence must be in English. If your licence isn’t in English, you will be required to provide an accurate translation. You also must not have received a disqualification or suspension on your licence.
If the passenger is rude and you cannot resolve this and you don’t wish to continue the journey with them, you can cancel the trip within the app, and request the passenger leaves your vehicle. If the passenger is abusive, you should call the police. Mish has a ‘support ticket’ function in the App where you can report any issues that arise. We do have a rating system where drivers and riders are given the opportunity to rate one another between 1 and 5 stars. This should give you peace of mind.
Riders pay for their seats(s) at the time of booking. Your card will be charged, securely through our third party payment processor – Stripe.
Once you have booked a seat, you’ll be able to communicate with the driver through our in-app messenger. You can chat with the driver and politely request an alternative pickup or drop-off location, or departure time.
No. Riders need to search for available rides published by drivers. If the journey you’re looking for isn’t available, keep checking because new rides are being published regularly.
